Every call has a definition, and you can look it up on Taminations. Knowing the definition of the call will help you immensely as you learn more calls. |
Studying helps! If you realize you don't understand a call, try to remember it and look it up on the teaching order list. |
You will see more advanced dancers dancing with their right palm up and their left palm down whichever gender role they are dancing. This way everyone interlocks. |
|
It’s a club policy: drinking and dancing don’t mix — even that one glass of wine will impair your learning ability, and can cause you to lose concentration and break down your square. |
Energetic dancing is fun, but make sure you understand the capabilities of everyone in your square, and even neighboring squares (you don’t want your exuberance to injure an elderly or physically-challenged dancer). |
Be easy on other dancers: use a gentle hand hold, and never push or drag a person into position. |
|
The default hand-holding position is men palms up; ladies palms down. |
If you are not understanding a new call, ask your caller to run through it with a square between tips. |
It's always better to let the caller explain a call to those in your square — dancers find it hard to listen to two instructors. |
|
It’s okay if you miss a call, but don’t talk about it — listen for the next one and try to catch up. |
Listening to the caller is the most important thing — if you're thinking about other things or talking you will probably cause your square to break down. |
